LINCOLN – Tears were shed and smiles were seen from ear to ear, as members of the 1st Infantry Division Main Command Post-Operational Detachment got to see their loved ones for the first time in nearly a year.
The group was formed in the spring of 2016, before being deployed to Iraq in August. They were stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas before mobilization.
Governor Pete Ricketts was on hand to greet the Guard soldiers, and had a special message to welcome them back to Nebraska…a Go Big Red chant.
Among the around 90 troops was Odell’s Staff Sargent Heidi McClintock, greeted by her son and parents.
“It was hard, but talking to them on FaceTime and on Facebook made it easier. It was a good job over there and my little man is proud of me.”
The ceremony took place 342 days after their send off on August 5th, also at Haymarket Park.
