Nebraska Legislature Advances Railroad Safety Bill

BEATRICE – A bill designed to increase safety at Nebraska railroad crossings has advanced to the second round of debate, in the Nebraska Legislature.  LB 81 would require motorists to stop for any railroad repair equipment at grade crossings, not just trains.

Senator Curt Friesen proposed the measure as a safety step for railroad employees.

A transportation committee amendment which was approved, would require that a stop sign be present at the specified grade crossing, and that there be a passive warning device located at the crossing.

LB 81 advanced on a 40-0 vote.
