BEATRICE – An area north of downtown Beatrice was cordoned off early last night, when a construction crew hit a natural gas line.
The incident happened at the Burger King Restaurant near 6th and Grant, where a renovation project has been going on.
:06 “the area”
A Black Hills Energy Crew was working to shut off the gas and make repairs. A Pinnacle Bank branch is immediately north of the restaurant and the Gage County Courthouse is across the highway, to the east. Aside from the bank, no other buildings were evacuated, and police and fire closed off the block where the restaurant is located. Traffic was still able to use 6th Street, or U.S. 77.
:06 “looks like, to me”
Daake says there’s always the potential for an ignition, in such an incident. In this case, the probability was low.
:23 “have an odor”
The odor of the chemical in the natural gas was strong, in the block around the leak. During the leak, the wind was from the south at about 5-to-10 miles-per-hour.
Emergency personnel were on the scene for over two hours early last night, as repairs were made.
