National drug prevention specialist talks with high schoolers in southeast Nebraska, northern Kansas

WASHINGTON, KS – Ray Lozano has traveled the U.S. for 32 years, teaching youth about drug and alcohol prevention in a more fun and interactive way.

“It’s a lot of information,” Lozano said. “It’s not scare tactics or testimonials. So, I’m giving the kids a lot of information, because what you find out is once they know better, they do better.”

Lozano stops in more than 300 high schools, roughly 322, in all 50 states every year. On Wednesday, he stopped Beatrice, Diller-Odell and ended in Washington County High School in Kansas.

“I’m the road about 9.5 months out of the year,” Lozano said. “All 50 states, and even internationally now. I also did a speaking tour in Sweden, Africa, London and Paris. I did my first presentation in high school, and have been doing it ever since.”

A California native, Lozano was invited to the area by the Fairbury Elks Lodge through the Elks Association State Drug Awareness Program. Lozano says with every stop he makes, he’s met by the same energy and enthusiasm.

“Kids are great,” he said. “(The speech) is mixed with a lot of humor, so it’s not real dry information. They love to laugh. It’s almost like watching a comedy show with drug information in it.”

It feels like a comedy show, because comedy is a large part of Lozano’s skill set. He has performed stand-up comedy at the Improv in Hollywood and Ontario, CA. He holds a current certification as Prevention Specialist by the state of California as a drug and alcohol counselor.

Lozano largely discussed the dangers associated with alcohol, marijuana and tobacco-vaping use and its impacts.

Lozano will be at Fairbury High School, Bruning-Davenport High and Tri County on Thursday, and Nebraska City on Friday. More information on Ray can be found here.
