Man Burned in SUV Fire, Dies at Lincoln Hospital

BEATRICE – A man burned in a vehicle fire last night east of Beatrice, has died. Chief Deputy Gage County Attorney Amanda Spracklen-Hogan says the man, who’s identity has not yet been released, died at 6:30 a.m. today.

He had been airlifted by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center burn unit, following the fire three miles east of Beatrice.

Gage County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jason Sharp said early Wednesday that authorities believe the victim started the fire.

The call reporting the fire came in at about 6:16 p.m., sending county law officers and Beatrice city and rural firefighters to the scene, just south of East Hoyt and South 36th Road.

Sharp said upon arrival, the vehicle was consumed by flames.

Emergency radio traffic indicated a white Ford Expedition driven by the victim was southbound when the fire began, and then stopped in the roadway.

An unconfirmed report indicated the man suffered third-degree burns over much of his body.
