COLUMBUS – A local resident is out $175, after falling victim to an IRS phone scam, say police.
Columbus Police Captain Todd Thalken says reports stated a local resident received a call from a person posing as the IRS. The scammer told the resident they had a warrant for their arrest, due to overdue taxes.
The resident then purchased $175 in iTunes gift cards and gave them to the scammer, per their request.
Thalken says government or public agencies will not conduct business in this manor, and anyone who is asked to pay with some form of a gift card should be wary of a scam taking place.
