Lancaster County Authorities Continue Investigation of Friday Night Fatal Accident

BEATRICE – Lancaster County Sheriff’s officer continue to investigate an accident on U.S. Highway 77 Friday night, that killed a woman while a flat tire was being changed on a vehicle along the west shoulder of the highway.

Authorities say a southbound 2010 GMC Sierra pickup, driven by 74-year-old Kenneth Lineweber of Beatrice, struck two people who were assisting another person with changing a flat tire on his vehicle.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner his officers are still investigating factors such as lighting, obstructions, where the pickup driver’s attention was drawn and other matters.  No arrest has been made.

Wagner says alcohol was NOT a factor in the 7:45 p.m., accident…which happened just north of the intersection of U.S. 77 and Hallam Road.

42-year-old Vonnell Briggs, of Lincoln, was pronounced dead at the scene. A medical helicopter responded to the accident site and transported the other pedestrian, 61-year-old Karen Meyer of rural Cortland, NE, to the hospital.   She initially was listed in critical, but stable condition.

Hallam Volunteer Firefighters, Cortland Rural Fire & Rescue, and Lincoln Fire & Rescue were sent to the scene.

A Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office crash reconstruction team was called to investigate the mishap.
