FAIRBURY – It was a rainy evening Friday, but shoppers picked up something extra for Jefferson County families in need and dropped it into an emergency vehicle.
A couple of years ago the Fairbury Police Department started a Stuff the Cruiser event that provided less fortunate children with some extra toys under the tree that they might not normally get. When the Fairbury Police was absorbed by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the toy drive was something they wanted to absorb with it.
This year the Fairbury Rural Fire Department, The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Dispatch, and the Jefferson County Ambulance all teamed up for a “Stuff the Emergency Vehicle” toy drive. All of the new toy donations are going to the Blue Valley Community Action Partnership for distribution in Jefferson County.
Jefferson County Sheriff Nels Sorensen says this gives the citizens of Jefferson County an opportunity to pay it forward this holiday season.
“Well you know, it’s just giving back to the community. We kind of facilitate this, the generosity of people that give to kids that are in need of maybe a little better Christmas than what they would have without this. There’s a lot of these that go on this time of year, but this will be local to Jefferson County.”
If you missed the past two “Stuff the Emergency Vehicle” events there is still an opportunity to help local families in need this Friday and Saturday at the Walmart in Fairbury.
