Jefferson County Attorney Seeks Grand Jury in Beatrice Man’s Death

FAIRBURY –  Jefferson County authorities are investigating the death of a Beatrice man who was considered in custody, at the time.

The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office is requesting that the Jefferson County District Court empanel a grand jury to examine the death of Drae Swarthout, a resident of Beatrice, who died at Crystal Springs Lake the morning of February 27.

Swarthout’s death occurred in the presence of a law enforcement officer who was conducting a welfare or safety check of Swarthout, at the request of Beatrice authorities.

According to a Beatrice Police law enforcement source, the death involved an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, after Fairbury officers had arrived at the scene.

The grand jury investigation is required by state law, whenever a person dies either while being arrested, or in presence or custody of police.
