Inmate Convicted of Platte County Forgery Dies in Custody

TECUMSEH – A man convicted of forgery and assault in Platte County has died after being found unresponsive while in custody at the State Correctional Institution.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says that inmate Terry Berry was being removed from life support.

The 21-year old was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday. Staffers say Berry was not breathing and was transported to Johnson County Hospital and then to Bryan West in Lincoln, where he was declared legally brain-dead on Monday.

Berry was serving two to four years in prison after being found guilty of forgery and assault on an officer in Platte County in 2015. He was projected to be released in December.

The NDCS has labeled the death as “suspicious” but have not given further details. The Nebraska State Patrol will be conducting a criminal investigation into Berry’s death.
