TECUMSEH – The Nebraska Department of Corrections reports that three staff members were assaulted by an inmate at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
The press release says staff members were removing several inmates, who appeared to be under the influence of homemade alcohol, from a housing unit.
The correction department offers the following narrative on what happened after a corporal approached an inmate to put handcuffs on him.
The inmate reportedly swung at the guard and knocked him to the ground, causing contusions to his head. The inmate then moved across the room and assaulted another corporal who was restraining another inmate.
Staff responded and used OC spray to stop the assault and subdue the inmate.
As staff was attempting to restrain the inmate, he reportedly bit a caseworker in the thigh.
The corrections department says the corporal suffered contusions to the head, required five stitches and received a chipped tooth and another was knocked loose.
The two corporals were treated and released from Johnson County Hospital. The caseworker did not seek outside medical care.
Communications Director Dawn-Renee Smith said the incident was isolated to one inmate and did not require the unit to be locked down.
