High Speed Chase South Of Fairbury Leads To Arrest Near Belleville

FAIRBURY –  The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a traffic complaint Thursday morning of a vehicle driving southbound on Highway 15 recklessly and traveling through a construction zone at speeds in excess of 100 mph.  A Jefferson County Sherriff’s Deputy was able to pull over the vehicle Highway 15 about six miles north of the Kansas/Nebraska border.

The driver, Octaviano Azpeitiac of Omaha Nebraska stepped out of the vehicle and brandished a handgun toward the deputy, then got back into his vehicle and fled from the traffic stop.

The Jefferson County Deputy then called for backup and initiated a high-speed pursuit with speeds exceeding 120 mph.  When the Deputy would get close to the vehicle the suspect would brandish the handgun out the window of his vehicle.

The pursuit entered into Kansas traveling south on Highway 15, then west on Highway 36 where the Kansas Highway Patrol entered the pursuit and took over as lead vehicle.  When the vehicles were four miles east of Belleville, Kansas, deputies with the Republic County Sheriff’s Office used spike strips to stop the vehicle and the vehicle came to a stop.

The driver, Octaviano Azpeitiac was then taken into custody and is currently being held in the Republic County Jail on charges out of the State of Kansas.

Azpeitiac will be extradited back to Nebraska upon completion of criminal charges in the State of Kansas.
