Hiawatha Woman Killed in Brown County, Kansas Collision

BEATRICE – A Hiawatha, Kansas woman was killed after the car she was riding in, failed to yield and collided with another vehicle at a rural intersection in Brown County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says 28-year-old Kami Coelho was a passenger in a car driven by 29-year-old Justin Coelho.  The vehicle was westbound when it failed to yield to a southbound pickup at the intersection of 220th Road and Plum Tree Road, about four miles east of Hiawatha.  The westbound vehicle struck the driver’s side of the southbound pickup.

Justin Coelho and a nine-year-old boy were injured and taken to Hiawatha Community Hospital.  The driver of the pickup, 22-year-old Quentin Overdick, of Hiawatha, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

The fatality victim and the driver of the car were not wearing seatbelts, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol, but the nine-year-old, was using a safety restraint. The driver of the pickup was also using a seatbelt.

The collision happened Tuesday, at around 5:40 p.m.
