In the Kansas High School Girls’ Basketball tournament, the Hanover Lady Wildcats played for a state championship for the third consecutive year.
This time, the two-time defending state champions would settle for a runner-up finish.
Hanover (24-4) fell in the Class 1A title to Central Plains, 52-34 on Saturday at the Dodge City United Wireless Arena.
The Wildcats hung in early, trailing only 27-21 at halftime. Central Plains, however, outscored Hanover 11-3 in the third quarter to take control.
“I felt like our girls did a good job with our game plan, and offensively I felt like we were ready for their press, we were ready for their man-to-man, but when they slapped that 2-1-2 on us, it’s not like we’ve never went against a 2-1-2, we just stopped being aggressive,” Hanover coach Chris Beikmann said to the Dodge City Daily Globe.
Hanover lost to a Central Plains team that has now won 111 straight games, and six consecutive state titles. Junior scored a game-high 29 points in Saturday’s victory.
Hanover senior Macy Doebele led her team in scoring with 19 points. She also pulled a game-high 11 rebounds, giving her 10 double-doubles this season.
Beikmann’s group will be loaded again next year. Hanover returns every starter except Doebele for the 2019-2020 season. Doebele is committed to play women’s basketball at Washburn next year.
