CRETE – No, Charlie Brown wasn’t in Crete on Sunday, but the Great Pumpkin Festival did draw a lot of people for the yearly celebration.
Executive Director of the Crete Chamber of Commerce, Kayleigh Schadwinkel, said that this year’s support from businesses, organizations and visitors easily topped last year.
“I mean, we were able to expand the festival clear out to our city park, in addition to Main Street. I was very happy with the turnout from the festival attendees, as well as all the organizations that came out on their Sunday afternoon to participate. It’s crazy that after so many months of preparation, it’s over, but I’m very pleased with the turnout of it,” said Schadwinkel.
This year’s festivities expanded through the whole weekend, something else that Schadwinkel and the Chamber added. Friday and Saturday featured many different activities like the Pumpkin Blitz, Backpack Fun Run and T.J. Sokol Terror.
Sunday’s events included a Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest, Scarecrow Competition and large festival piñata.
Schadwinkel even ran the Great Pumpkin Festival on her 23rd birthday.
“It was a great way to spend my birthday. I was around a whole bunch of individuals that I just love. I had my Doane family because I just graduated from Doane in May. It was so exciting to see all those friendly faces, as well as the new faces and connections I’ve made within the Crete community with this job. How the festival turned out, I’m very pleased and it was a great birthday present,” declared Schadwinkel.
The festival ran all day on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
