Grand Jury: Man Stabbed in Columbus Police Custody Died by Suicide

COLUMBUS, Neb. – A Columbus man’s death in police custody was officially ruled a suicide by a grand jury.

The grand jury ruled that 39-year-old Daniel Harmon died of suicide while Columbus Police were responding to a dispute on the 1600 block of 40th St. in Columbus.

Four Columbus Police Officers and an investigator with the Nebraska State Patrol testified before the grand jury. All officers involved were cleared of any wrongdoing.

The autopsy was performed by pathologist Erin Linde, who believes the death was a suicide.

Police say that Harmon had a knife and was threatening to harm himself.  The man then inflicted a fatal knife injury on himself, according to CPD captain Todd Thalken.

All in-custody deaths in Nebraska are required to be investigated by grand juries.
