Governor’s Favored Candidates in Two Legislative Races, Fail to Advance

BEATRICE – Legislative candidates in two southeast Nebraska races who were supported by Republican Governor Pete Ricketts, failed to advance from the Primary Election to November.

In the 30th District race, Gage County Board Chairman Myron Dorn, of Adams won the primary in a close race with Don Schuller of rural Wymore, 3,154 to 2,967.  Joe Murray, of Firth…who was supported by the governor, finished a distant third, with 1,658 votes.  Both Dorn and Schuller advanced to the November election.

Dorn was the target of what some viewed as inaccurate attack ads by an out-of-state organization, but it didn’t seem to make an impact, in the end.

Dorn says people were supportive during his campaign.

:15                  “good reception”

Dorn expects a competitive race against Don Schuller.

:12                  “state legislature”

Don Schuller says he’s feeling good about the close vote among the candidates going on to November.  He says the negative campaign ads run on behalf of the third-place finisher by an out-of-state entity, probably hurt the person eliminated in the Primary.

:12                  “backfired”

Schuller says it will be a friendly competition going to November, but says that doesn’t rule out independent organizations continuing to run attack ads.   Schuller says he believes in the non-partisan nature of Nebraska’s Legislature.  Schuller expects property taxes will continue to be the major topic heading toward November, and whether replacement revenue will be found.

Both candidates said they’ll take a break from the campaign trail…at least for now.  Schuller says he has soybean planting to do.

In the 32nd District, Tom Brandt of Plymouth rolled to a victory in the Primary, with 3,495 votes.  Incumbent Libertarian Laura Ebke of Crete also advances to the November election with 2,603 votes.  Al Riskowski, the candidate supported by Governor Ricketts, finished in third with 1,772 votes.
