BEATRICE – Survivors of cancer gathered on a perfect weather day at the Gage County Fairgrounds Saturday, to celebrate overcoming the disease and to remember those whose lives were taken by cancer.
Ron Cullison, a Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame member, is a survivor of liver cancer, having undergone a transplant after years of fighting and ultimately conquering Hepatitis C.
Cullison drew inspiration from the strength of his daughter Erica, who passed away after being diagnosed with brain cancer at age eight.
:15 “get better”
Cullison credited his wife Linda and sons Gary and Jason with their support…as well as his baseball mentor…former Beatrice Bruins Manager Bob Steinkamp. Cullison said being involved in baseball taught him to be competitive.
:43 “working today”
Cullison said he’s now coaching baseball with his eight-year-old grandson on the team…and their team won their first game, on Saturday.
:25 “bless you all”
The Beatrice YMCA this coming September will be leading a pilot program of wellness for cancer patients. Shely Bauman, Director of Health and Wellness says the “Live Strong” program has received a grant and will be offered at no charge to those dealing with cancer and their family members.
:23 “to you”
Saturday’s American Cancer Society Relay event schedule included survivor and remembrance laps, games, food and music…including songs by a Beatrice High School girl’s quartet.
