Gage County Investigators Looking Into Extortion, Through Social Media

BEATRICE – Gage County law officers are investigating an apparent case of attempted extortion.

Several county residents have reported to sheriff’s officers that while on Facebook, they became friends with an adult female, who claims to live and work in Omaha.  They then had private video messages with the woman.  During the conversations, the suspect apparently obtained compromising video of the victims and threatened to release them to the victim’s family, friends and employer.

The victims are then contacted by text message, and told to send money via a moneygram, to a person identified as “Daniela Coopers”, in Mali.

Sheriff’s investigators say the victims reported being told to send thousands of dollars…and in some cases, were instructed to sell their vehicles, or the suspect would send the video clips to their family and put it on YouTube.

Investigators say one victim did send a small amount of money, but was continued to be threatened.  The suspect also attempted to set up a payment plan, where the victim would send several hundred dollars, weekly.

Investigators have informed the victims not to make any payments.  Gage County law officers say there have been several reports of this type of activity throughout Nebraska.  They say when Facebook shuts down one profile, the suspect opens a new one.   Authorities say two consistencies in them have been the use of the name, “Daniella Coopers”….and the Republic of Mali.
