Gage County Authorities Investigate Online Vehicle Scam

BEATRICE – Gage County Sheriff’s officers are investigating a vehicle purchase that may have scammed a Cortland resident, out of $8,000.

Authorities say the resident reported to an investigator that he had been shopping on Craigslist, and located a vehicle he wanted to buy.

After communicating with the seller, he sent payment to a third-party bank account in California, on the understanding that the vehicle would be shipped to him.

After several days, he attempted to contact the seller and the third party to get the payment stopped or refunded.  However, he was unable to make contact.

The victim’s local bank is working to retrieve the money, which apparently was transferred to a legitimate account, but then withdrawn from the account.

Gage County investigators are working with the victim’s bank and Lincoln Police, on the theft investigation.  The victim planned to make an online report of the incident to the Federal Trade Commission.
