Four Staff Members Assaulted at Tecumseh State Prison

TECUMSEH – Just short of two weeks after the Tecumseh State Prison had two inmates die on Thursday, March 2nd, four staff members were assaulted on Wednesday afternoon.

After the March 2nd incident, Unit 2AB was operating on modified operations.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, at approximately 1 p.m., flooded cells from clogged toilets and their meal service led to the release of four inmates out of their containment.

Four staff members were assaulted following, with two of them requiring outside medical attention.

The staff members used force to subdue the inmates and stop the assaults.

Department of Correctional Services Director Scott R. Frakes said, “Continued physical acts of violence will result in more safety precautions and fewer individuals allowed out at one time. We will do whatever is necessary to keep people safe. The only way the current conditions of confinement can change is when individuals demonstrate they are not a risk to cause harm to others.  That is done through good behavior and respectful interactions with staff and others.”

Housing Unit 2A remains on modified operations due to the March 2nd incident, but the level of movement will not be reduced because of Wednesday’s assaults.
