Firefighters Battle Flames at Landfill, South of Beatrice

BEATRICE – Beatrice city and rural firefighters spent part of the overnight period fighting a fire at the Beatrice Area Solid Waste Agency landfill, south of the city.

Beatrice Fire Captain Craig Fisher says city and rural firefighters used around three-thousand gallons of water to douse a fire in a mountain of garbage.   Grass rigs from the city, the rural department and Homestead National Monument of America were used to battle the flames.

Heavy equipment was on scene to pull apart some of the burning debris.

There was no damage to any buildings at the landfill.  No injuries reported.   The cause of the fire has not been pinpointed, but spontaneous combustion of material, Fisher says, is a possibility.

Beatrice Fire and Rescue and Beatrice Rural Fire were sent to the scene at around 10:30 p.m., and fought the fire until about 1:30 a.m.
