BEATRICE –  A vehicle traveling through a stop sign resulted in a fatal accident at a highway intersection south of Beatrice, Wednesday afternoon.

Gage County Sheriff Millard Gustafson says an 18-year-old male died at the scene of the accident, at U.S. Highway 77 and West Lilac Road.

Investigators says a 2005 Ford Escape driven by Shawn Vraspir of Beatrice was traveling west when he allegedly ran the stop sign at U.S. Highway 77. The SUV was struck in the intersection by a northbound 2009 Ford F150 pickup, driven by 47-year-old Sadie Saunders of Topeka, Kansas.

Vraspir’s vehicle came to rest after hitting a house located at 1852 W. Lilac Road. Saunders’ pickup came to rest in the west ditch of Highway 77.

Vraspir died at the scene, and Saunders was transported to Beatrice Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Sheriff’s officers say seat belts where in use.   Officers have not yet determined if alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in the accident. The collision remains under investigation.
