Ella Street Surfacing Work Bumping Up Against New School Year

BEATRICE – Racing to beat the first full day of the new school year in Beatrice, a downtown street construction project is getting underway.

Beatrice City Engineer James Burroughs says the resurfacing with a three-inch layer of new asphalt will happen on Ella Street between Third and Sixth, and on Third between Court and Ella.

Construction has been going on at intersections, with new sidewalk ramps.  The intersection work is expected to be completed by the end of this week.

Beginning next Monday, Burroughs says Ella and Third Streets will be shut off to traffic.

In the overnight period, Beatrice Street Department crews will be painting new road stripes, parking stall markings and crosswalks.

Burroughs says the city wants to keep heavy truck traffic off the newly resurfaced roads for a couple of days, so the road will remain closed on Wednesday… the first partial day of school.

While the construction is going on, Beatrice Fire, Rescue and Ambulance units will exit onto Ella between Second and Third Streets.

Burroughs says if all goes well, Ella Street will be reopened on Thursday, the first full day of the new Beatrice Public School year.

Pavers, Inc. of Waverly is doing the project, at a cost of about $300,000.
