BEATRICE – The driver of a westbound pickup that ran off U.S. Highway 136 in west Beatrice Sunday afternoon striking a tree, has died.  Beatrice Police Monday morning identified the victim as a local dentist….66-year-old John Russell.

The pickup crossed the opposite lane of West Court, or U.S. 136 and jumped a curb just west of West Court and Center Street.  The truck traveled across a grassy area and knocked down a road sign, before hitting a tree in a small area named Frolick Park.

Gill said alcohol use is not suspected and the driver was alone in the pickup.  He was not wearing a seatbelt.

A police sergeant said Monday morning that Russell died of a medical issue, not the injuries in the accident.

No other vehicles were struck by the out-of-control pickup.  The accident happened at around 1:17 p.m., Sunday.  Russell died in Lincoln, at around 2:45 p.m.
