FALLS CITY – The Richardson County Sheriff’s Office is reporting the rescue of a distraught woman from the Missouri River bridge at Rulo.
Off-duty deputy Jonathon Kirkendall happened to drive by the woman Saturday afternoon, noticing her sitting on the north railing, dangling her feet over the edge near the highest point of the bridge.
The deputy stopped his vehicle and started a conversation with the woman, who appeared to him to be having a mental health crisis. A sheriff’s office press release says the woman repeatedly threatened to jump off the bridge.
Kirkendall motioned for Sgt. Frederick to keep a short distance away as the woman appeared to get more agitated to see a uniformed deputy.
Kirkendall kept talking calmly to her and inched closer until he was able to grab her with both of his arms around her body and pull her from the railing. Sgt. Frederick assisted in getting the woman off of the bridge.
The Targeted Adult Service Coordination Crisis Response Team was called to evaluate the woman and made arrangements for follow-up resources.
Other agencies responding were the Iowa Tribal Police Department, SAC & Fox Police Department and Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
