Defendant Back in Custody, After Failing to Appear For Gage County Trial

BEATRICE –  A man who skipped his scheduled jury trial in Gage County District Court last month, is back in custody.

A Deputy Gage County Attorney says Robert Waite was arrested in Carroll, Iowa, in an alleged shoplifting incident.   He waived extradition proceedings to be returned to Nebraska, and is now being held in the Gage County Jail.

Waite is scheduled to attend a hearing in Gage County District Court this afternoon.

His trial was set to being September 27th on felony charges of strangulation, 3rd-degree domestic assault and 1st-degree false imprisonment.   He now also faces a felony charge of failure to appear.

A bench warrant had been issued by District Judge Julie Smith, and the warrant was returned, October 16th.
