Crete names Mark Newmeyer as new head football coach

CRETE – Assistant football coach Mark Newmeyer was promoted to the position of head coach for the Crete Cardinals football team Monday. The school made the announcement on Twitter Monday afternoon.

Newmeyer is a graduate of Doane University (2008), where he played wide receiver for the Tigres football team. Newmeyer is also a physical education teacher and assistant boys’ basketball coach at Crete.

He graduated high school from Wilber-Clatonia in 2004.

He previously served as a graduate assistant and running backs coach at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, beginning in 2015.

Newmeyer will succeed Reed Manstedt, who has been the Cardinals’ head coach the past four seasons. Crete was 3-6 last year with one of the youngest teams in Class B.

A former assistant at Waverly, Manstedt accepted the head coaching job with the Vikings back in March.
