OMAHA – The Crete boys’ soccer team (14-2) have won a state tournament game for the first time in school history.
The No. 4 seed Cardinals beat the No. 5 seed Vikings, 3-1 at Morrison Stadium in Omaha Wednesday night in the first round of the 2019 NSAA state soccer tournament.
Senior striker Anthony Bolaños scored two of Crete’s three goals. The dagger came in the second half when senior midfielder Hamilson Vincente scored on a penalty kick, putting the Cardinals ahead 3-0 with just 15 minutes left.
The Vikings responded shortly thereafter, as sophomore Parker Janky scored a goal roughly a minute later.
Crete had already beaten G.I. Northwest 6-1 in the regular season on Apr. 23.
The Cardinals, who have now won six straight matches, face a big test on Saturday morning when they take on No. 1 seed Omaha Skutt (13-4). The Skyhawks beat No. 8 seed North Platte, 2-0 Wednesday.
The semifinal match is slated for 9 a.m. Saturday at Morrison Stadium. The Class B championship is set for Monday at 5 p.m.
