ODELL, NE – Ground has been broken on a brand new gymnasium for Diller-Odell High School.
The new gym, which should be completed by summer 2019, will cost about $4.5 million. The new facility will be largely funded through the school’s special building fund.
Michael Meyerle, Diller-Odell’s superintendent, hopes the new gym will allow the school to host a wider variety of events with a larger number of spectators.
“The hope is not only will we be able to host our conference finals, but maybe even a subdistrict or district final between other teams,” he said. “We’re not set up to host a tournament ourselves currently, but that’ll change.”
The gym will feature an entrance on the east side, with a connection to the existing high school. The main concourse area will house the concession stand, trophy displays, concession seating, video boards and charging stations.
Spectators will be able to view events from the concourse area through large glass windows.
Teams will be seated on the floor in chairs on the guest side (north side). There’ll be an upper viewing area on the home side (south side) for media and spectators to stand.
The gym will also offer three rows of bleachers on the west end for the band or for students to stand and watch the game.
There will also be two locker rooms for Diller-Odell’s teams to utilize during games. The visitors will unload on the south side of the high school and use the old locker rooms.
There’ll be a team room in the new gym for visiting teams to use at halftime.
Diller-Odell’s current gym has been around since 1959. Meyerle says that gym will still be used for events like graduation.
