PICKRELL– A project that began in 2014 to honor war veterans in and around the Pickrell area was dedicated Sunday, during the community’s annual picnic.
The Pickrell Veterans Memorial is located along the north side of the Gage County town’s main street. It consists of flags, granite benches and monuments where 163 names of local veterans are etched.

Coordinator and member of the Veterans Planning Committee, Marilyn Schlake says the project has drawn a very positive reaction from the local community and the veterans the memorial honors.
:09 “very proud”
The stone for the memorial came from India and the project design was created by River Valley Memorials, of Auburn. Lawayne Jurgens Construction of Pickrell and Sticks and Stones Hardscapes, Inc., of Firth helped construct the memorial, which is part of the Pickrell Park. Schlake says it’s hoped that visitors to the town north of Beatrice will enjoy the memorial.

Flags of the United States, the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and a POW flag fly at the memorial. With the current design, there is room for just over twenty more veteran’s names on the granite stones.
