Columbus Woman Killed in Train Accident

NORTH BEND – A Columbus woman lost her life last night after a train collision west of North Bend.

Wednesday night, just after 9PM, the Dodge County Sheriff’s office dispatched several deputies to the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a train on County Road 4 south of Highway 30 near North Bend. A 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by Debra Kessler, 54, of Columbus was traveling northbound on County Road 4 and approached a railroad crossing marked with crossbucks. The van was driven onto the railroad tracks and was subsequently struck by a train.

North Bend Rescue personnel extricated Kessler from the vehicle, who was then flown by Medivac helicopter to Fremont Health. Kessler was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Kessler was the lone occupant of the van, and was not wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol is not being considered a factor in the accident, according to Dodge County Sheriff Steven Hespen.
