Car Leaves Highway Onto Yard, Strikes Tree

BEATRICE – A Crab Orchard woman was ticketed for leaving the scene of a property damage accident, about nine hours after the vehicle she was driving, struck a tree.

Gage County Sheriff’s officers were sent to the accident east of U.S. Highway 136 and South 51st road yesterday around noon.  That’s about three miles east of Beatrice.

A resident in that area reported that an eastbound vehicle left the highway, traveled across her front yard and struck a tree.

A sheriff’s investigator contacted the registered owner of the vehicle, who said that 30-year-old Erin McIlheran,  had been driving the vehicle when the accident happened.

Sheriff’s officers say the driver met with an investigator at the sheriff’s office, saying she had been driving the vehicle at around three a.m., when she swerved to avoid several deer in the roadway.  McIlheran had injuries authorities say were consistent with the severity of the accident and damage to the vehicle.

McIlheran said she had called a friend but the friend was unable to pick her up, from the scene.  Sheriff’s officers were told by the driver that she walked home, to Crab Orchard…a distance of about seventeen miles.

She was cited for leaving the scene of the accident.
