FAIRBURY, NE – Six schools converged on Fairbury Jr./Sr. High School Friday afternoon for the Fairbury Wrestling Invitational.
For many of the six schools – Fairbury, Beatrice, Sabetha KS, Milford, Bishop Nuemann and Lincoln Lutheran – this marked the last regular-season tournament before districts begin next weekend.
The Beatrice Orange took first Friday, with 13 of its 15 varsity wrestlers placing in the top four of their respective weight classes.
Tanner York (113), Drew Arnold (120), Trevor Reinke (126) and Torrance Keehn (170) all took first place.
“I thought they performed very well,” Beatrice head coach Jordan Johnson said. “This was the first time we’ve really had everyone healthy in the second half of the season. So, I think they’re starting to click and come together.”
The Fairbury Invite was the first tournament that Beatrice has taken first in all season.
“We had a couple second places,” Johnson said. “This team has come together at the end when we need them to, so we’ll see how we do (at districts).”
Beatrice travels to Platteview for districts.
The highlight for Fairbury came from Hyson, who set a new school record with an eight-second pin against Casey Williams of Sabetha.
That broke the previous record of nine seconds held by Dakota Cochrane in 2005.
“It felt really good,” Hyson said. “It was my first time getting first at a tournament, and it was just awesome.”
The Jeffs have districts at Aurora on Feb. 8 and 9.
