Beatrice Shopko Store to Close in May

BEATRICE – The Shopko Hometown Store in Beatrice is among the latest that will be closed by the company, after the corporation filed for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy in January.

The Beatrice store along east U.S. Highway 136 is among a dozen more expected to be closed.   The others are in Auburn, Falls City, Ainsworth, Ogallala, Superior, Alliance, Gothenburg, Norfolk, Gordon, Albion and West Point.

Beatrice Mayor Stan Wirth says the local economic development organization will be working toward finding another business for that location, off the north side of the highway.

Eleven Nebraska Shopko locations were already scheduled to be closed.

The Green Bay, Wisconsin-based company lists 360 stores and will have less than one-third of them open by the end of May.

All locations listed as closing will shut down by the end of May.  The Beatrice location was formerly a Pamida Discount Store….and prior to that, a Gibson’s Store.  Shopko officials list the estimated final day of operation of the Beatrice store, as May 12th.

Shopko previously announced it was looking to restructure the business because of “excess debt and ongoing competitive pressures.”

Hy-Vee, Inc. announced in December that it acquired the business of some Shopko pharmacies including locations in Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island and Norfolk.
