Beatrice Rural Fire Chief Jim Engel was laid to rest Saturday.  He was 59.  Funeral services were held at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice Saturday morning, with firefighters from several area departments in attendance.

Engel began volunteering for the Beatrice Rural Fire Department in 1984 and became Chief of the department in 2004.

Engel is survived by his wife, parents and two sisters.   A procession of fire trucks traveled north on U.S. Highway 77 following the funeral, to Engel’s final resting place at the Pleasantview Cemetery, near Pickrell. 

Engel, a Beatrice native, graduated from Beatrice High School in 1977 and earned an Associate Degree in Science from Southeast Community College, at Milford.  He worked for Cessna Aircraft before returning to the rural Beatrice area in 1984.

He and his wife Robyn have farmed north of Beatrice.  Jim Engel also served on the Midland Township Board.
