Beatrice Residents Getting Free Batteries, For Detectors

BEATRICE – There should be no excuse for any Beatrice resident to go without a fresh battery in their smoke detector.

Beatrice is one of 72 communities nationwide to receive a grant to provide free nine-volt batteries to residents for their home smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors…a partnership between Keep America Beautiful and Duracell.

The Keep Beatrice Beautiful affiliate organization is getting 36,960 batteries, being distributed through the local fire department.  Administrator Linda Grell said at retail price per battery, the local grant amounts to $138,600.

Duracell donated almost $3.5 million to 72 cities across the U.S.  Beatrice Fire Captain Jeremy Seggerman says the battery distribution just got underway.

The National Fire Protection Association indicates that two thirds of fire deaths in the U.S. happen in homes where smoke alarms were not present, or not working.

The battery project is among the largest in-kind donations Keep America Beautiful has received in the 65-year history of the organization.
