Beatrice Police Investigate Weapon Found at Grocery Store

BEATRICE – Police have arrested a man after a backpack that contained a handgun, was found in a local grocery store.

Beatrice Police officers were summoned to the Sun Mart Store on East Court early Saturday night, when an employee found a backpack with a gun inside.  The worker reported that a man in a wheelchair had gone into a restroom with the backpack.

Police investigating found a 45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, with seven bullets in the magazine of the weapon.   Authorities also recovered a baggie of marijuana and a digital scale, from inside the backpack.

Police arrested 29-year-old Ryan Mathews of Beatrice, who told authorities he did not have a concealed carry permit for the weapon.  During a search, police said they recovered a syringe from a pants pocket of the suspect, that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Mathews’ bond was set at $5,000 in Gage County Court, for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and drug-related counts.  According to the Gage County Sheriff’s website, he was not in custody.   A hearing is scheduled for August 22nd.
