Beatrice Officials Approve Zoning Changes, Alley Transfer

BEATRICE – The Beatrice City Council has approved the rezoning of some areas just south of the downtown area, that have been designated as central business district area.

The area in question will now be designated as either general commercial, or R-4 residential.  City officials discussed the change during prior discussion about storage containers.  City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer said that discussion involved where the containers were allowed, in the city.

Tempelmeyer says the main difference between the central business district and general commercial zones, is structure and spacing of buildings.

Following public hearings, the city council gave approval to the zoning changes, which had been recommended by the city’s planning and zoning commission. There was no public comment during the hearings before the council last night.

City officials also approved closing, vacating and selling an alley to Gage County, next to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center.

Gage County will now own most of the block between 6th and 7th and Lincoln and Washington Streets, except for a parking lot owned by a nearby funeral home.  The alley is next to the former Buss Stop liquor and convenience store, acquired and remodeled this year by the county for use as an evidence storage facility.

The City of Beatrice retains an easement for utility access along the alley.
