Beatrice Middle School Student Dies From Flu Complications

BEATRICE – A Beatrice sixth grader has died at an Omaha hospital, after contracting the flu.

Harman Wright Mortuary, of Beatrice….in an obituary, said 12-year-old Draven Findeis died unexpectedly from complications from the flu at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, on Wednesday.  He was surrounded by family members.

The funeral home said Draven, a sixth grader at Beatrice Middle School, was an avid artist and reader.  He is survived by his mother and father, grandparents and others. In lieu of memorials, the family is encouraging everyone to get a flu shot in memory of Draven.

Funeral services will be held at two p.m., Monday, at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice. A visitation is scheduled from noon until eight p.m., Sunday.

Public Health Solutions Health District in southeast Nebraska says in the U.S., flu outbreaks can start as early as October and last as late as May.  Health officials recommend everyone get a flu shot.  At particular risk are the elderly, young children and persons with a chronic health condition.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports flu activity is elevating across the country.  Influenza A viruses have been predominant, since October.  Eleven pediatric deaths from the flu have been reported this year, in the United States.

According to the CDC, Nebraska is one of eleven states where flu activity is reported to be widespread.  Iowa and Kansas are among states that have reported localized influenza activity.
