BEATRICE – Beatrice Assistant Fire Chief Jake Carrel will soon become Kaukauna, Wisconsin’s New Fire Chief. His wife, Angela…originally from Norfolk, grew up in Kaukauna.
:16 “here we are”
Carrel started his firefighting career 19 years ago in Beatrice as a firefighter, moved up to Captain, then to Assistant Chief of the department. He and his wife have three children…Ryan, Emily and Owen. Angela is a math teacher at Beatrice High School. Jake’s new position begins May 28th and his last day with the Beatrice Department will be Friday.
All are excited for the move, though Jake does acknowledge he’ll miss being with the Beatrice Fire and Rescue Department.
:08 “big change”
Kaukauna, Wisconsin is a city of about 16,000 residents, south of Green Bay and north of Appleton. Carrel’s wife has a lot of extended family members who reside there. The city has a new city hall, police department and fire department, which was built in 2017. Public works is also located nearby.
Jake, whose father John was a Beatrice Fire Inspector with the department for several years, says the Beatrice department has always had top-notch personnel.
:22 “they’ll continue to”
Carrel says the Kaukauna Department has three shifts of six-firefighters each…compared to three with seven firefighters in Beatrice. All of the Kaukauna department members are paramedic level, and the department provides fire service and is an advanced life support ambulance service, like Beatrice. There are four assistant fire chiefs under the chief’s position….one on the day schedule and one for each of the three firefighter shifts.
Beatrice will have a new fire headquarters in the next year-and-a-half.
:17 “a wash…(laughs)”
Carrel says he hopes to come back and get a look at the new station one day.
As a side note….Carrel says he is a Green Bay Packers fan. That’s probably a good thing…since Kaukauna is only 20 minutes away from Lambeau Field.
