Beatrice Elementary Kids Helping With Flood Recovery

BEATRICE – Upwards of 400 to 500 Beatrice Elementary School students are helping with cleanup at the Scott Street recreational complex today, following flooding that inundated the area just days ago.

Students from Stoddard and Paddock Lane schools were being bused in shifts, volunteering to help city workers with getting the park area back in shape.

Elementary Principal Kevin Janssen says the effort is an extension of Orangemen Pride and getting kids to realize the benefit of giving back to their community.

Students were filling trash bags, transporting debris and helping city workers with various cleanup projects.  Janssen says each class of third through fifth graders was committing an hour and fifteen minutes to the effort.

Beatrice Public Properties Director Mark Pethoud and his crew members and equipment were working with the students on the community service project.
