Beatrice City Council Approves Sales Tax Ordinance

BEATRICE – The Beatrice City Council held a brief, special meeting early Friday morning, passing an ordinance to enact an extra half-cent local sales tax to fund construction of a new fire headquarters.

Voters approved the additional half-cent in the November General Election, with over 53% of the vote in support of the tax, which brings the total local sales tax, to two percent.

City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer says the half-cent will go into effect in the spring of next year.

The tax must start at the beginning of a quarter, according to Nebraska Department of Revenue state law.

Retailers will be notified by the State of Nebraska about the date the half-cent collection begins.

The revenue from the half-cent, estimated at about one million dollars annually, will pay off a bond issue.   Tempelmeyer says it’s estimated the issue would be paid off in about nine to eleven years, depending on the costs of site acquisition, construction cost of the headquarters and the interest rate on the bond issue.

The council approved the ordinance by a 7-0 vote.
