BEATRICE – Authorities in Gage County are investigating an extortion attempt against an area church.
An investigator says a rural Beatrice church contacted him to report they had received an e-mail from an unknown person, trying to get $550 from them in Bitcoin.
The e-mail falsely alleged that church members viewed pornography and threatened to send that information to people in their contact list, unless payment was made.
Sheriff’s officials did not identify the church that was targeted. The extortion attempt was reported to authorities, Friday morning.
The investigator advised the church not to make any payments and have a professional scan their computers for viruses. Sheriff’s officials are cautioning residents against such scams, demanding a payment by a suspect trying to embarrass them and extort money. They point out even if a payment is made, there’s no guarantee the suspect won’t ask for additional payments or release the information anyway.
Persons affected by such scams should contact their local law enforcement agency.
