Backpack Program Continues To Help Beatrice Students

Beatrice—For the past ten years Beatrice elementary students have benefited from the Backpack Program which provides  those students in need with food on the weekends. Patty Kaufman, who helped kick-off the program ten years ago, says the need for the program continues in the school district…

Each year, a fundraiser called “Empty Bowls Luncheon” is held to raise the needed dollars to keep the program operating. Kristy Theis says the annual event will be held this year at the Holiday Inn Express on Wednesday, April 11th

The luncheon will feature 14 different soups and tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.

Kaufman says sponsors and volunteers help make the fundraiser a success..

The Backpack Program started ten years ago as a project of the Leadership Beatrice program of the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce. When the program first began, Kaufman says backpacks were provided to 25 students.

Today they are providing food on weekends to 100 students.
