Backhoe Taken From City of Beatrice, Recovered

BEATRICE –  The City of Beatrice has recovered a backhoe taken from a construction site.

Beatrice Police Lieutenant Mike Oliver says the machine owned by the city was found behind the former West Court Dairy Queen, off the north side of Court Street.  It had been taken from a work site at 5th and Logan, and had been missing since Monday night.

Oliver says at around 10 o’clock Tuesday night, a neighbor heard the machine pull in, behind the former restaurant building.  The machine, valued at about $30,000, was not damaged.

Oliver says whoever took the backhoe apparently knew something about operating a piece of heavy equipment.  It was parked with the bucket and a front-end loading attachment, having both been lowered to the ground.

No one has been arrested in the theft of the machine, used by the city’s water department.
