Authorities Seeking Columbus Man Accused of Sex with Teen

COLUMBUS, Neb. – An arrest warrant has been issued for a Columbus man that has been accused of having sex with an underage girl.

21-year-old Andrew Yates is accused of 1st degree sexual assault of a minor stemming from two alleged incidents beginning in 2016.

Records say Yates, who was 19 at the time, had sex with a 14 year-old girl in Columbus, first in July of 2016 and then another time in March of 2017 when he was 20.

The girl told authorities that the two were friends and would sometimes use meth, pot and alcohol when they were together, according to documents.

Yates told police that they had sex once during their relationship, saying his “hormones had gotten the better of him,” according to the affidavit.

The arrest warrant was issued on March 23rd and the Platte County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook Friday morning that he is still wanted.

If convicted he faces one to 50 years in prison.
