BEATRICE – A Gage County war veteran was recognized Wednesday, by county supervisors in their ongoing project to remember area service members’ sacrifices for their nation.

Herman Hofeling was inducted into the U.S. Army in January, 1951…..and served through January, 1953.  County Veterans Service Officer Phil Dittbrenner says Hofeling, a paratrooper, was a member of Company D of the 188th Airborne Division.

Hofeling was witness to Nevada nuclear testing, an atmospheric test of a nuclear weapon.   He pointed out that the late Richard Beck was witness to a ground nuclear test and local veteran Gene Seidel also was witness to nuclear testing.

The pictures shown by Hofeling show a group of young men outside a Greyhound Bus, as they were entering the service.
