BEATRICE – Beatrice area residents turned out in full force Wednesday, to support the Backpack Program at Beatrice Public Schools. The annual Empty Bowls Lunch was held at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel Conference Center featuring a variety of soups.

Co-Coordinator of the Backpack Program fundraiser, Patty Kaufman, says the project helps provide meals for needy kids on weekends, in a school district where there is a high percentage of children eligible for free, or reduced-price lunches.
:19 “a growing need”
Because of growth in the program, Kaufman says the effort has some reserves as it helps about 100 families. The Empty Bowls lunch typically raises between $32,000 and $35,000 each year through ticket sales and sponsorship support. Kaufman says operating the program can cost up to $40,000 annually.
Kaufman says people can contribute to the Backpack Program, any time of the year.

Local restaurants and caterers provide the soups for the fundraiser, with tickets sold for a $25 donation. Those attending received a pottery bowl made by Beatrice High School Students, Southeast Community College Art Students, by Ervin Dixon, Patrick McKinney and Down Under Pottery.
