COLUMBUS – Competitive smokers from four area communities are coming together in a Columbus man’s driveway to cook for those in need this holiday season.
Jason Whitmore says he and several other competitive smokers from communities such as Columbus, Humphrey, Norfolk, and Battle Creek will be gathering in his driveway this Saturday at 7 a.m. The cooks will each smoke their own turkey as well as cook a side dish, that will later be delivered to the Center for Survivors in Columbus.
This is the second year of the event, and Whitmore says working with the Center for Survivors has been a positive experience.
“It’s a really neat feeling to work with somebody like that, and we are accepting donations,” says Whitmore, “Whatever donations we ask for the public to bring here, because there is no staff on hand Saturday [at the Center for Survivors].”
Whitmore says he has seen a great response from the community in regards to the event and says they have already begun receiving donations.
“They’ve supplied us with a nice list, I think you guys have the list as well, and we just ask, you can bring the donations any time, but preferably get them here before five o’clock on Saturday,” says Whitmore.
The cook will take place in Whitmore’s driveway at 131 East Parkway in Columbus and if you would like to drop off a donation earlier than Saturday you can call Jason at 402-270-0400.
